About University of Pittsburgh
The University of Pittsburgh, more commonly known as Pitt, is a state-related research university located in Pittsburgh, which is the county seat of Allegheny County and the 2nd largest city in the US state of Pennsylvania, having a population estimated at a number of more than 300 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census, fact which also makes it the largest city along the Ohio River and is also the largest city located in Appalachia.
Pitt was established in February, 1787, as Pittsburgh Academy, being one of the oldest continuously chartered institutions of higher education in the United States. The university adopted its current name in 1908, and for most of its history, it was a private institution, until 1966, when it became part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education. It is popularly recognized for its centerpiece building, the Cathedral of Learning, which is the tallest educational building in the Western Hemisphere.
The University of Pittsburgh offers its students bachelor's, master's, doctoral and professional programs, through several academic divisions, which include: School of Information Sciences, Graduate School of Public & International Affairs (GSPIA), College of General Studies, and University Honors College. Athletics
Pit's athletic teams are known as the Pittsburgh Panthers, who compete in NCAA Division I (Division I FBS for football) and in the Big East Conference, being, perhaps, best known for their football and men’s basketball teams, which have proven to be consistently competitive, Sports Illustrated on Campus ranking Pitt 17th among all U.S. universities in terms of the overall strength of its athletic program. Traditionally, the most popular sport at the University of Pittsburgh is football, which has been played at the highest levels, since 1890, the football team winning a total of nine National Championships, more than 80 players being chosen as first-team All-Americans.
